Orion and the Sea

Oy vey. Paradise is HOT!

Sometime during our time in La Paz summer set in. We hit that bewitching hour about halfway through May when most of the cruising community finished prepping their boats and left for higher latitudes. It was right around that time that we really started sweating. Especially the week before tropical storm Blanca. We weren’t sure if it was the distant storm system stifling our regular afternoon winds or if mother nature was simply testing our perseverance, but it was in the mid-90s INSIDE our home all week… and well over 100 F outside.

This heat causes a complete shift in temperament, attitude, and needs. It doesn’t matter how many things are on your to-do list, if you get one of them done in the heat of the day it’s a success. One has to be strategic about where to go and when to be on the move. I’d walk to do an errand and find myself loitering in such unexpected establishments drawn in by the air conditioning I felt spilling out into the street. We ate a lot of palletas (amazing popsicles in every flavor), which cost a $1.50 and are sold on every other corner, and which may be my second favorite thing about La Paz. One blessing about the heat was when it returned to 90 F outside and 80 F inside, with a nighttime breeze, we were actually a little chilly. Acclimation is trippy.

Lifesaving, amazing, wonderful palletas!
